Himachal Pradesh
which is India's only mountainous state to hold all
the five ranges that comprise the Great Himalaya, offers a wealth of
experiences to travellers. The famous hill stations of Himachal from
Kasauli to Shimla and Dalhousie offer a glimpse back to the days of
the Raj. Take a look at the painstakingly preserved Tibetan culture at
the home of the Dalai Lama in McLeodganj. Say prayers at the shrine of
Hatkeshwari Mata or Rewalsar Lake. The valleys of the Beas River in
Kullu and Kangra and of the Sutlej in Kinnaur offer some of the best
terrains for soft adventure in the country. Never rafted before? Try
it for the first time on the Beas in Kullu. Never been on a trek? Do
the easy one from Sangla to Sangla Kanda in Kinnaur. Never climbed to
the summit of a peak? Go to Manali to try your luck on Ladakhi or
Hanuman Tibba. Never tried skiing? Whizz down the slopes at Solang.
Himachal also holds pristine Himalayan sanctuaries. Look high up in
the air for the lammergeier in the Great Himalayan National Park, or
go searching for the elusive shanku in Spiti.
