CHIPLUN
Break free of Goa
By Anuradha Kumar

The Konkan town of Chiplun is off a bend halfway down the green-banked grey highway Amitabh rode in Bombay to Goa. Bringing in Amitabh was the only way to avoid calling it Mumbai to Panaji. Can you imagine a film called that? But then those who ink milestones in our country have imaginations as wide as slits in ballot boxes. This highway means to Mumbai what a tunnel is to a convict. It’s a pilgrimage because freedom is always sacred. That’s why Mumbaikars have been taking this road for years — to do in Panaji all they would in their own city if only the skyscrapers and Pramod Navalkar didn’t crowd so. But then they’ve also been coming back with a headache and a sore realisation that there is such a thing as ‘too much of a good thing’, and it lives in Goa.

This is where Chiplun comes in. It’s the pocket between these two high ends, a place to put your feet up when you want out both from the rat race and the beach animals. Chiplun is like a gracious host, undemanding of its guests but always solicitous. No dazzling attractions force themselves on your itinerary here but if you choose, there are always wide green vistas to gaze upon and beautiful points to drive to. Also, enough good food and odd purchases will interleave your interlude.
