GOPALPUR Far From The Maddening Crowd By Sarojini Nayak
Gopalpur-on-Sea is a sleepy hamlet that betrays no traces of its glorious past. Once a port around which maritime activities were centred, it’s today a retreat for those looking for a quiet holiday. Only the ruins of an old port speak of a time that won Gopalpur its prominent place in Oriyan history. While kings may have sworn by trade and commerce, Gopalpur curried royal favour for other reasons as well. Its lovely atmosphere had the wealthy scurrying to this part of the Oriyan coastline to build their holiday homes.
One can understand why that would have been the case after a visit to Gopalpur. In the mornings, the beach is completely tranquil, except for the roar of waves. A strong breeze comes your way as the azure waters take on a silvery sheen in the midday sun. The kings have long left and the beach is almost empty. Yet, as you stand on the shore, you feel a bit like royalty yourself. The shore is yours as is the sea. And in your imagination, you can even summon a thousand boats to stop at this port of yesteryear.
ORIENTATION The story behind the place’s name has it that as many villages went by the name Gopalpur, the unique moniker Gopalpur-on-Sea was coined to distinguish it from others. A small temple to Gopalaswamy, located on the road to Gopalpur-on-Sea, is also believed to have given the place its name. The main beachfront at Gopalpur stretches for less than a kilometre and has a children’s corner with slides, swings and the works. A few hotels are located on the beach, the base of their buildings almost touching the waves. The rest of the buildings are a little away from the sea, across the road, along the beachfront.
Gopalpur has a hilly topography and a sturdy pair of legs is enough to cover it. Autos are available; these don’t run on meter but charge about Rs 20 for short rides. Bicycles are available for hire through the recommendation of hotels at Rs 5 per hr. There’s no tourist office at Gopalpur but information may be available at the government-run Panthanivas.
BEACH WATCH Swimming is not advisable because of the rough sea. Some nolias (fishermen) have certifications from the beach police and act as beach guards. They have been given identity cards to this effect. Beachwear is not recommended. |
