TARKARLI
Bliss On The Beach
By Joan Pinto

The Sunday Times, London, has called it one of the best beaches in the world. You tend to agree when you drop anchor at the Tarkarli Beach, a long stretch of white sand that seems to run forever. The water is emerald-green, and when the sun’s rays fall at the right angle, you can see all the way down to the seabed. A line of casuarinas hides it from the outside world, and when you walk past the trees and out on to the beach’s powder sands, you involuntarily let out a long, satisfied sigh.

As I wiggle my toes in the sand in the stillness of the morning, I look out far to the little town of Malvan hugging the sea. From Malvan, it’s a beautiful drive down shady, winding paths, past tamarind and coconut trees, to Tarkarli. Further out on Kurte Island, Sindhudurg, the imposing sea fort built by Shivaji, floats like a battleship. Around me children race down the talcum beach and dunk each other into the welcoming, warm, white-capped waves of the sea. At my feet, crabs draw spiral designs in the sand. It’s such pure bliss that you understand why an international cruise liner like the Hebridean Spirit fits Tarkarli into its itinerary — this beach is truly world-class.

ORIENTATION
Tarkarli is an hour’s drive down from Kudal, and a short drive from Malvan; the road leads all the way to Deobaug Village to the south. Though you will not want to step away from the Tarkarli Beach, do factor in a visit to nearby shores; Malvan’s beach Chiwla and Deobaug’s stretch of sand are also worth visiting. The hotels are all located close to each other and are a short stroll (not even 100m) from the beach. The closest bus stand is at Malvan. State Transport buses stop near the Maharashtra Tourism Department Corporation (MTDC) Resort. Autos are the quickest way to get anywhere (a minimum of Rs 20 to get to Deobaug; Rs 70 one way to Malvan). Autos don’t run by meter, so check rates with hotel officials before you hire one. There’s no tourist office at Tarkarli, but the MTDC Resort can help you with information.

Other beaches near Tarkarli are: Kolamb, 8 km away and 1/2 hr by auto (fare Rs 80-100), and Achra Beach, 28 km away and 1 hr by auto (approx fare Rs 200). Both are clean but don’t have restaurants or accommodation nearby.

BEACHWATCH
Tarkarli is safe to wade in but swimming is not recommended because of strong undercurrents. The MTDC has a sign outside that suggests you check with officials before you go swimming. The MTDC Resort is where you can head to before deciding to swim; it’s open all day and the manager can tell you if the waters are safe at that time of the year. There are no lifeguards on the beach.
