When the British left India in 1947, Mussoorie went through a slump. But the 1980s saw an emerging Indian middle class that took to hill stations just as the British did in the Raj days. They may not come for long vacations but they are there all the same for that much needed weekend break. They promenade along the Mall, relax in their hotels, drive out to Dhanaulti or walk or drive down to the Kempty Falls. Families get themselves photographed in a variety of costumes, children visit ice-cream parlours or video game shops, and honeymooners amble down Camel’s Back Road.
