MUSSOORIE 1Lording over the plainsBy Ruskin BondOnce called the Queen of the Hills, the old lady has lost some of her lustre, and her crown is slightly dented. But she is still worth a visit — ideal for a weekend away from the smog of Delhi. Visitors will find that the air is still pure and invigorating, the mountains majestic, and the plains below, green and verdant to the jaded eye.
When the British left India in 1947, Mussoorie went through a slump. But the 1980s saw an emerging Indian middle class that took to hill stations just as the British did in the Raj days. They may not come for long vacations but they are there all the same for that much needed weekend break. They promenade along the Mall, relax in their hotels, drive out to Dhanaulti or walk or drive down to the Kempty Falls. Families get themselves photographed in a variety of costumes, children visit ice-cream parlours or video game shops, and honeymooners amble down Camel’s Back Road. |
