At Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar created an artificial lake in the middle of the parched region. While Akbar’s descendants greatly contributed to Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri is entirely the emperor’s doing. He built palaces, shops, inns, hospitals and mosques. Down the stone corridors of this palace, his friend Birbal would keep him company on many relaxed evenings. The witty courtier, who was to eventually become the clever hero of many popular comic books, was killed during a military campaign, unable to engineer a daring escapade from fate.
